This iconic commercial vehicle has been a staple in countless industries for decades, proving its worth in various roles from cargo transportation to passenger shuttles. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the heart of what makes the HiAce such a popular choice, exploring its history, features, performance, and the diverse applications it caters to.
A Legacy of Endurance
The HiAce story begins in the late 1960s when Toyota introduced a compact van designed for commercial use. Since then, the HiAce has undergone several iterations, evolving to meet the changing demands of the market. Its robust construction, coupled with Toyota’s renowned engineering, has solidified its reputation as a vehicle that can withstand the rigors of everyday use.
Engine
The new HiAce comes fitted with a turbocharged 2.8-liter (1GD-FTV) I4 diesel engine with 150 hp and 221 lb-ft as standard with an average consumption of 12 km/l or a 3.5-liter (7GR-FKS) V6 petrol engine. These engines are paired with either a six-speed manual/automatic transmission. It replaced the famous Toyota 1KD engine .
In Kenya the 1GD-FTV was unveiled in 2017 by Toyota Kenya for its Hilux and Fortuner models.
Versatility Redefined
One of the HiAce’s greatest strengths lies in its adaptability. Available in various body styles, including cargo vans, passenger vans, and commuter buses, it caters to a wide range of needs. Businesses can choose from different wheelbase and roof height options to optimize cargo space or passenger capacity.

Safety First
Toyota prioritizes safety, and the HiAce is no exception. It comes standard with a range of safety features, including anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and airbags. Some models also offer advanced driver assistance systems to enhance safety on the road.
Maintenance and Reliability
The HiAce reputation for reliability extends to the HiAce. Regular maintenance is essential to prolong the vehicle’s life, but owners can expect minimal downtime and lower repair costs compared to many other commercial vehicles.
Cost of Ownership
When considering the HiAce, it’s essential to factor in the total cost of ownership. While the initial purchase price might be higher than some competitors, the long-term benefits, including fuel efficiency, resale value, and low maintenance costs, can offset this investment.
